FAQ:

How does Laser Hair Removal work?

Laser hair removal involves light at a specific wavelength that targets pigment in our hair follicle. When the light enters the follicle, it is converted to heat energy that inactivates the follicle, preventing the hair from growing again. The Elos Plus by Candela also has an additional energy called Radio Frequency for deeper penetration of heat and more efficient inactivation of hair follicles.

Hair on our body grows in 3 phases: Anagen (active growth), Catagen (transition) and Telogen (resting). At any given time about 85%-90% of our hair is in the Anagen phase, 1-2% is in the Catagen phase, and 10-14% is in the Telogen phase. Laser light is only able to target hair in the active growth phase i.e. Anagen phase. However, Anagen phase for hair on our body lasts approximately 30-45 days. This is why laser hair removal sessions need to be spaced 4 - 6 weeks apart for effective results.

How many sessions of Laser Hair Removal will I need?

Due to this cyclical nature of hair growth, most individuals require between 6 to 8 treatments to see ~90% reduction in hair growth.

Does Laser Hair Removal hurt?

Thanks to advancements in technology, laser hair removal treatments are virtually pain free. The Elos Plus also has a special Sapphire Contact Cooling tip which provides protection against heat and ensures a comfortable and almost pain-free treatment. People most commonly compare the treatment to the snap of an elastic band against the skin.

Is there any downtime after Laser Hair Removal?

There is no downtime after laser hair removal. Some people may experience slight redness and/or swelling after treatment, which normally subsides within 24 hours. This is a positive indication that damage has occurred to the hair follicle and your body is reacting to your hair removal treatment. It is recommended that exposure to the sun is limited and treatment area be protected with SPF for 48-72 hours due to increased sensitivity to UV radiation post treatment.

Can Laser Hair Removal be done on any skin type?

Laser hair removal can be done on any skin type as well as hair type. However, it is ineffective on grey or light blond hair, as they do not possess any pigment. The pigment in the hair follicle is integral for the laser light to target them. Blonde and grey hair are best treated with another technique called Electrolysis.

Is Laser Hair Removal safe during pregnancy?

No, laser hair removal is not considered a safe treatment during pregnancy. Although, laser hair removal has been cleared by the FDA as a safe treatment, there is insufficient data on any adverse effects of the treatment on unborn children.
